True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country.
In a modern 21st century family, where often both parents are busy working to pay off mortgages, high schools remain the single most effective and reliable way to deliver that education to all citizens.
The fruits of education are obvious – a better selection of jobs, wider understanding of the world and those who live in it, tolerance of others, the thinking skills and general knowledge to be an informed voter, and the independence to live on their own instead of having to constantly rely on their parents once they become an adult.
The US, or any other civilized country, would fail if they did not have some form of compulsory attendance up to a certain point. Although not everyone wants to go to college, or should go, everyone needs to know how to read, write, do math, and behave like a civilized human being. There are certain things all citizens need to know and much of this knowledge is supposed to be taught in high schools. It is the equivalent of being forced to eat your vegetables!
