The theme of separation from reality is prevalent throughout the work. Blanche is unhappy with her lot in life and attempts to craft a better life for herself. She initially does this through lies and stories, such as her fabricated correspondence with Shep Hundley. This escalates and by the end of the story she is living completely in fantasy. Stella and Eunice also choose to ignore the reality of Stanley’s abuse and sexual assault.
The theme of sexuality leading to destruction manifests in a few ways. After Blanche chastises her husband for his homosexuality, he promptly commits suicide. Her relationship with Mitch ends after he discovers her past promiscuity. Stanley’s rape of Blanche serves as the catalyst for her final descent into madness.
