Although biomimicry has been widely used in architecture and engineering, it has also played a major role in the medical field and has assisted in the production and use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are referred to as drugs used to target microbes that cause disease and the spread of bacteria. They have helped the world survive through multiple epidemics and our society to fight against infections and diseases, including the common flu. The very first antibiotic, penicillin was formulated when Alexander Fleming, a doctor and bacteriologist discovered that a specific type of mold called Pennicilium Notatum had contaminated petri dishes in the presence of bacteria and microbes. He found that the bacteria was being dissolved, leading to the discovery of penicillin in 1928. This helped our society overcome many infections which were common at that time, where the smallest cuts potentially led to serious infections.
