A combustion reaction is where a chemical reaction is formed and undertaken by A compound and an oxidant reacting to produce heat and create a new product, (thoughtco, 2017). Therefore, combustion is an exothermic reaction. The opposite of exothermic is endothermic, which is absorbing heat, not releasing it, (Google dictionary, 2018). An example of an endothermic reaction is melting ice cubes. Where a salt is dissolved, and heat is obtained, (thoughtco, 2017). On the other hand, freezing water into ice cubes is an example of an exothermic reaction as heat is released, (Science notes, 2016). Heat, oxygen and fuel are key features used in proper combination for ignition and combustion to take place. There needs to be a fuel to burn, air to supply oxygen and heat to ignite and continue the combustion process, (, n.a).
Cellular respiration is the procedure in which organic compounds are oxidised to produce energy, (also known as ATP, Adenosine triphosphate), for cellular processes, (, 2018). Cellular respiration identifies as a combustion reaction because oxygen reacts with sugar/ glucose to produce energy, (tutorhunt, 2013). Cellular respiration is necessary for organisms to survive. Wood burning in a fire is an example of cellular respiration. During cellular respiration, oxygen is used by the cell to break down sugar. As wood is burned, oxygen is used by the cell to break down sugar/glucose. Carbon dioxide and energy are consequently released, (cK-12,2018).
